FREE CROCHET PATTERN: Big brim Navy hat

You will love this hat! It is so easy and quick to make and if you’re a beginner this is perfect project for you.
Perfect gift for special person in your life!
It is written in 3 sizes (child, teen and adult) so you don’t have the excuse not to make it! 🙂
The pattern uses only basic crochet stitches!

For this pattern you will need:
  • Cotton yarn

(I used „Unitas Mirabela“, weight: Sport/5 ply, 155 yards (142 meters) in 50 grams (1.76 ounces)) but you can use any other yarn similar to this one here is also the link to Ravelry about that yarn http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/unitas-mirabela and link to the list of substitute yarns http://yarnsub.com/yarns/unitas/mirabela

  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • yarn needle
  • beads

You will use a double strand of cotton yarn for this pattern.

That means you will hold two strands together to create one strand while crocheting.

Stitches used:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • slst – slip stitch

This pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms.

Let’s start!

On every row you will change the color to get navy stripes. To change the color just pull second color through the loop and make ch 2 like on the picture below.

Let’s start making the hat.
After you finish the base of the hat scroll down to make the brim. The brim is same for all sizes.

Row 9: Ch3, 1 dc in every stitch around, slst in the 1st dc from beginning.

Row 10-18: Repeat row 9.

(I made last 2 rows in white because we will put a blue lace through the last row of dc’s, but you don’t have to if you don’t want.)

Also, I didn’t cut the yarn on every row so I don’t have to much ends to deal with later. You will have this line on the inside if you don’t cut it.

We will now make the brim.

Row 1: Ch1, make 1 sc in every stitch around, slst in the first sc from beginning.

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc in the same stitch that you made slst in, 2 hdc in the next, *1 hdc in next, 2 hdc in next, repeat from * to the end, slst in the 1st hdc from beginning.

Row 3: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same stitch that you made slst in, 1 dc in every stitch around, slst in the 1st dc from beginning.

Row 4 and 5: Ch 2, repeat row 3, slst in the 1st dc from beginning.

Row 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in the same stitch that you made slst in, 1 hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in the next, *1 hdc in next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in next, repeat from * to the end, slst in the 1st hdc from beginning.

Row 7: You can do this one with contrasting color. Ch 1, 1 hdc in the same stitch that you made slst in, 1 hdc in every stitch around, slst in the 1st hdc from beginning. Fasten off.

Now make 2 times about 150 chains.

And a flower.

Start with chain 4, slst in first chain to join in a ring.

Round 1:

*ch 3, sc into the ring, repeat from * 5 more times.

Round 2:

*slst in 3ch space, ch 1, 3 dc in same 3ch space, ch 1, slst in same space, repeat from * 5 more times.

It is time to assemble everything.

Pull the laces through the last row of dc’s like on the picture.

Now pull the ends through the center of the flower.

Put some wooden beads on the ends and tie a knot to secure the beads. Cut of extra yarn.
