FREE CROCHET PATTERN: Granny Square Bag

Granny Square Bag

This bag is really easy and fun to do!
And most of all quick so it is perfect last minute gift.

You can fill it with small gifts or use it to carry few personal items.

In this post I will explain how to make granny squares and how to join them into bag.

You can make smaller squares for smaller bag or bigger squares for larger if you want.

For this pattern you will need:
  • yarn (you can use any yarn for this bag)
  • 3 mm crochet hook (or hook size required for the yarn you are working with)
  • yarn needle

Stitches used:

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet (optional)
  • slst – slip stitch

This pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms.

LET’S START!

Make 3 identical granny squares!

Round 1: Make ch 3, 2 dc in third chain from the hook, ch 1, 3 dc in the same chain as previous 2, ch 1, 3dc in the same chain, ch1, 3 dc in same chain, ch 1, slst in the first dc from the beginning, slst in next dc, slst in ch1 space.

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in same ch 1 space, ch 1, 3 dc in the same chain space,  3 dc in the next chain space, ch1, 3 dc in same chain space, 3 dc in the next chain space, ch1, 3 dc in same chain space, 3 dc in the next chain space, ch1, 3 dc in same chain space, ch 1, slst in the first dc from the beginning, slst in next dc, slst in ch1 space.

Round 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same ch 1 space, ch 1, 3 dc in the same chain space,  3 dc in the next space between 2 groups of 3dc’s, *3 dc in next chain space,  ch1, 3 dc in same chain space, 3 dc in the next space between 2 groups of 3dc’s, repeat from * two more times, ch 1, slst in the first dc from the beginning, slst in next dc, slst in ch1 space.

At this point you’ll see that we made a square.

Rounds 4-8 (or more): Now repeat round 3 until you reach the square size you want. (I made 12×12 cm/4.7 in squares)

Note: At every angle where you made ch1 make 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in that chain space, and between 2 groups of 3dc’s make 3 dc.

When you’re done it should look like this.

Now bend them in half and join with yarn and yarn needle.

Note: Be careful to match groups of 3 dc’s so you’ll get nice and even seam.

When you come to the end tie a knot with two ends to secure it.

Now, holding two strands of yarn, make a chain about 110 cm/43 in long (you can do longer if you want longer bag strap, 1 dc in the third chain from the hook, 1 dc in every chain to the end.

Fold the corners of the bag a little  and just tie the strap. This way you can control the length so you can wear your bag over the shoulder or around your belly. 🙂

For the cover make 12 chains.

Row 1: 1 dc in the third chain from the hook, 1 dc in every chain to the end, ch 2, turn.

Row 2: 1 dc in every stitch to the end, ch 2, turn.

Row 3-10 (or more if you want): Repeat row 2. Fasten off but leave longer tail so you can sew the cover to the bag.

With yarn needle sew the cover to the bag.

Now on the other side tia a button that can go through the row of dc’s.

Weave in all ends and you’re done!

For the green bag I did the same thing just had a few modifications.

First – I made it with cotton yarn instead of wool.

I made granny squares with half double crochet, instead of double crochet to get the smaller holes.

I put a buttons on the sides for the strap instead of tie the strap to the bag.

And I made the cover holding two strand of yarn with single crochet and half double crochet. If you want to make it this way do the following:

Chain 13

Row 1: 1 sc in second chain from the hook, 1 sc in every chain to the end, ch 1 turn.

Row 2: 1 sc in every stitch to the end, ch 1, turn.

Row 3 and 4: Repeat row 2.

Row 5: 1 sc in next 4 stitches, chain 4, skip next 4 stitches, 1 sc in the last 4 stitches, ch 1, turn.

Row 6: 1 sc in next 4 stitches, 4 sc around chain 4, 1 sc in the last 4 stitches, ch 1, turn.

Row 7, 8 and 9: Repeat row 2.

Rows 10-20: 1 hdc in every stitch to the end, ch 1, turn.
