FREE CROCHET PATTERN: Moss stitch small pouch

There is a custom in my country that every time a child has a birthday
brings to school candies to share among class mates to make a
little celebration of the most important day in his or her life. 🙂

Every year I pack small organza bags filled with
gummy bears, lollipops or chocolate bars  for my daughter to share,
and for the teachers I crochet a little pouch bag! 🙂

Every year I design new pouch for the teachers! 🙂 It is sooooo FUN! 🙂

First year it was this super cute small pouch and it became a huge hit!

I also made a lot of them as Christmas gifts for my friends and family!

MOSS STITCH SMALL POUCH! 🙂

And I am totally in love with it! I can’t wait for her birthday so she can give them! 🙂
I still have to make three more! They will be all in different colors so stay tuned for more inspiration! 🙂

I hope you will enjoy making this pouch as much as I did creating it! 🙂

For this pattern you will need:
  • Yarn

(I used two brands  – variegated „Strickgarn knitting yarn“, fiber: 100 % polyacryl, 360 yards (330 meters) in 100 grams (3.53 ounces) and white „Alize – Lanagold fine“, weight:  Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi), 426 yards (390 meters) in 100 grams (3.53 ounces)) but you can use any yarn that you like working with. The ticker the yarn is the biggest the pouch will be and vise vrsa.

This pattern will work great if you use variegated yarn with contrasting solid color yarn.

  • 3 mm crochet hook (or hook required for your yarn)
  • yarn needle

Stitches used:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • slst – slip stitch

This pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms.

Let’s start!

We will make the bottom first holding two strands of yarn.

Row 1:

Ch 2, 6 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, slst in the first sc that you made.

Row 2:

Ch 1, make 2 sc in every sc around, slst in the first sc that you made.

Row 3:

Ch 1, make 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst in, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the first sc from the beginning of the row.

Row 4:

Ch 1, make 2 sc in the same sc that you made slst in, 1 sc in next 2 stitches, *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 2 stitches, (repeat from * around), slst in the first sc from the beginning of the row.

Row 5:

Ch 1, make 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst in, 1 sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the first sc from the beginning of the row.

Row 6:

Ch 1, make 2 sc in the same sc that you made slst in, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, (repeat from * around), slst in the first sc from the beginning of the row.

Row 7:

Ch 1, make 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst in, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the first sc from the beginning of the row. Fasten off.

From now use only one strand of yarn!

Insert your hook only through the back loop of the stitch and attach yarn by pulling a loop through and ch 1.

Row 8 (only through back loop of the stitch):

Make 1 sc in that same stitch, 2 sc in next, *1 sc in next, 2 sc in next, (repeat from * around), slst in the first sc from the beginning of the row.

Row 9:

Ch 2, skip the stitch that you made slst in, 1 sc in next, *ch 1, skip next stitch, 1 sc in next, (repeat from * around), slst in the ch 2 from the beginning of the row.

Now attach second color (I attached variegated now)

From now you will change color on every row. I didn’t cut the yarn every time I finished the row because that would be too much ends to deal with later. You will have a line of yarn on the inside of the pouch if you don’t cut it.

To change the color just pull new color through the loop and make chains that next row requires.

Row 10:

Ch1, 1 sc in the ch2 from previous row, ch 1, *skip sc, 1 sc in ch 1 space, ch 1, repeat from * to the end. Slst into first sc that you made.

Row 11:

Ch 2, skip 1 sc, 1 sc in ch 1 space, *ch 1, skip sc, 1 sc in ch 1 space, repeat from * to the end. Slst into first sc that you made.

(In every row you are making sc in ch1 space and ch1 above the sc from previous row.)

Repeat rows 10 and 11 until you reach desired height of the pouch. I made 22 rows.

Row 34:

If you end with row 10 than make ch1, 1 sc in the sc from previous row, *1 sc in ch 1 space, 1 sc in sc from previous row, repeat from * to the end. Slst into first sc that you made.

If you end with row 11 than make ch1, 1 sc in the ch2 from previous row, *1 sc in next sc, 1 sc in ch 1 space, repeat from * to the end. Slst into first sc that you made.

Row 35:

Ch 2, 1 dc in every sc from previous row. Slst into first dc that you made.

Row 36:

Ch 2, 2 dc in every dc from previous row. Slst into first dc that you made. Fasten off.

Now insert your hook through the front loop of the last row of the bottom and attach yarn.

Ch 2, make 2 hdc in every stitch to the end. Slst into first hdc that you made. Fasten off.

Holding two strand of yarn make two strings. (I made mine with both yarns – white and variegated) Make chains until the length is little longer than the circumference of the pouch like on the picture:

Pull both of them through the row of dc’s so the ends are on opposite sides:

Tie a know on every end and one knot to conect two ends!

Weave in all ends, fill it with candies and you’re DONE!!! 🙂

I hope you enjoyed it! 🙂
