FREE CROCHET PATTERN: Crochet hooks case or BTS roll on pencil case

This case is really easy and fun to do.
You will need about 2 – 3 hours to make one depending on how much hooks or pencils you want it to hold.

Dimensions are: approx. 32 cm/12.5 in width, 18 cm/7 in height.
The one on the picture is designed to hold 12 pencils/10 hooks but in the pattern is explained how you can make it for any number of pencils/hooks.
I hope you will enjoy this pattern as much as I did creating it! 🙂

For this pattern you will need:
  • Cotton yarn

I used „Unitas Mirabela“ but you can use any other yarn similar to this one.
I recommend Patons 100% Cotton DK or Wendy Supreme Luxury Cotton DK both available in Deramores online yarn shop.

  • 3 mm crochet hook
  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • yarn needle
  • buttons

You will use a double strand of cotton yarn for this pattern.

That means you will hold two strands together to create one strand while crocheting.

Stitches used:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • slst – slip stitch

This pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms.

Let’s start!

Use double strand and 4 mm crochet hook!

We will start with chain.

First decide how many pencils/hooks you want to hold and multiply that number with 4, than add 9 more chains.

I wanted my pencil case to hold 12 pencils so that is: 12 x 4 + 9 = 57 chains and hook case 10 hooks so that is: 10 x 4 + 9 = 49 chains

Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd chain from the hook, 1 sc in every chain to the end, ch 1, turn.

Row 2: 1 sc in every sc from previous row, ch 1, turn.

Rows 3-10: Repeat row 2.

Row 11: 1 sc in next 5 stitches, *ch 2, skip 2 stitches, 1 sc in next 2 stitches, repeat from * until you have 5 stitches left, 1 sc in next  5 stitches, ch 1, turn.

Row 12: 1 sc in next 5 stitches, *2 sc around ch 2, 1 sc in next 2 stitches, repeat from * until you have 5 stitches left, 1 sc in next 5 stitches, ch 1, turn.

Rows 13-22: Repeat row 2.

Row 23: Repeat row 11.

Row 24: Repeat row 12.

Rows 25-34: Repeat row 2.

You made the base of pencil/hooks holder with holes for the pencils/hooks. Don’t fasten off.

Now we will go around it making 1 sc in every row on the side (you should have 33 stitches on the sides)

Continue on the other side of starting chain (56 stitches – or as many stitches as the first row)

Again on the other side in every row make 1 sc

To finish make one more row – 35th also making 1 sc in every sc to the end, slst in the first sc of the side. Fasten off.

Now we need to make closing strap.

Row 1: Make 10 sc on the side between the holes like on the picture below, ch 1, turn.

Rows 2-36 (If you are working on a holder with more pencils/hooks you should add about 3 more rows for each added pencil/hook. It is best that you measure while you crochet to get nice and tight closing strap):

1 sc in every sc from previous row, ch 1, turn.

Row 37: 1 sc in next 4 stitches, ch 3, skip next 2 stitches, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, ch 1, turn.

Row 38: 1 sc in next 4 stitches, 5 sc around ch 3, 1 sc in next 4 stitches. Fasten off.

Holding only one strand of yarn and with 3 mm crochet hook attach contrasting color in the same stitch where the last stitch of the first row of closing strap is but only through the back loop, ch 2, 3 hdc in that same loop, make 3 hdc in every stitch around the holder only through the back loop until you reach first stitch of closing strap and make 3 more hdc in the back loop. Fasten off.

Tie a button at the beginning of closing strap. I used 10 mm button but you can use any button that can go through the hole at the end of a strap.

Let’s make flower and leaf!

Flower (For the hook case I made only flower holding two strands of yarn.)

Start with chain 4, slst in first chain to join in a ring.

Round 1:

*ch 3, sc into the ring, repeat from * 5 times.

Round 2:

*slst in 3ch space, ch 1, 3 dc in same 3ch space, ch 1, slst in same space, repeat from * 5 times.

Leaf

Start with chain 4, slst in first chain to join in a ring.

Round 1:

*ch 4, 2 sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc next 2 ch, sc in foundation ring, repeat from * 4 times, do not join.

Round 2:

*sc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st, 2 dc-1 trc-2 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, sc in next 2 st, slst in next st, repeat from * 4 times. Fasten off.

Tie them at the end of closing strap with some cute button or bead!

I think ladybug is perfect for good luck in school! 🙂
