FREE CROCHET PATTERN: Marija slouchy hat

The other day my dear friend Marija called me and asked me to make her a slouchy hat!
She wanted something warm and soft and made with variegated yarn!
….sooooo I went shopping! πŸ™‚
I found this beautiful soft yarn and the moment I saw it I knew…..THIS IS IT!! πŸ™‚

I wanted it to be something simple because this yarn is pretty thick so I decided to use combination of hdc stitches!

This hat is designed with much love and positive energy and there are no advertisements on this page so you can follow the pattern without distraction!
I also made her an infinity scarf! πŸ™‚
Pattern for the scarf is here:
MARIJA INFINITY SCARF

So, if you are ready, LET’S START! πŸ™‚

For this pattern you will need:

  • Yarn

(I used β€žKartopu Jerseyβ€œ, weight:  DK,  394 yards (360 meters) in 200 grams (7.05 ounces) For this hat I used about 150g) but you can use any other yarn similar to this one.

Here are some other brands that I would recommend for this scarf: Bernat Pop!, Alize Burcum Batik, Caron Cakes, Lion Brand Scarfie yarn and Red Heart Gumdrop.

  • 6 mm crochet hook
  • 5 mm crochet hook (optional)
  • yarn needle

Stitches used:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • fphdc – front post half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • fpdc – front post double crochet
  • bpdc – back post double crochet
  • slst – slip stitch

This pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms.

Pattern is written in size for adult.

Leave a longer tail because we will close the hat with it at the end and start by making multiple of 3 chains + 2 until you reach about 54 cm/ 21 in.

I made 69+2 chains.

Row 1: 1 dc in the 3rd chain from the hook, 1 dc in every chain to the end, slst in the first dc that you made to join the ring. (Be careful not to twist your work.)

Row 2: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same stitch you made slst in, 1 dc in every stitch to the end, slst in the first dc that you made.

Row 3: Ch2, 1 fphdc in the same stitch you made slst in

To make fphdc do not insert hook through the two loops of the stitch like you normally would but through the post of double crochet from previous row like it is shown on the picture. Yarn over, pull through, yarn over pull through all loops on the hook.

now make 2 hdc’s in the space between the next 2 dc’s

1 fphdc in the next stitch

between two fphdc’s you’ll have 2 dc’s of the previous row. Now continue making 2 hdc between next two dc’s, 1 fphdc in next stitch to the end of row, slst in the first fphdc.

Here are several stitches made

Row 4: Ch2, 1 fphdc in the same stitch you made slst in, 2 hdc in the space between 2 hdc’s from previous row, *1 fphdc in next fphdc, 2 hdc in the space between 2 hdc’s from previous row, repeat from * to the end of the row, slst in the first fphdc.

From now repeat row 4 until you reach about 24cm/9.5 in.

At this point I changed my hook to 5 mm because I wanted brim to be little tighter than the rest of the hat, but if you like you can continue with 6 mm.

Row 5: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same stitch you made slst in, 1 dc in every stitch to the end, slst in the first dc.

Row 6: Ch 2, 1 fpdc in the same stitch you made slst in, 1 bpdc in next, *1 fpdc in next, 1 bpdc in next, repeat from * to the end of the row, slst in the first fpdc. You should end this row with bpdc, if there is one stitch left where you should make fpdc, skip that stitch and make slst to finish the row.

This is how you do fpdc and bpdc (front post double crochet and back post double crochet):

Do not insert hook through the two loops of the next stitch like you normally would but through the post of double crochet from previous row like it is shown on the picture. Yarn over, and then continue the usual way for double crochet. For fpdc you’re inserting hook from front, and for bpdc you’re inserting hook from behind.

Rows 7-10: Ch 2, fpdc in the same stitch you made slst in, 1 bpdc in next, *1 fpdc in next, 1 bpdc in next, repeat from * to the end of the row, slst in the first fpdc.

Row 11: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same stitch you made slst in, 1 sc in every stitch to the end of the row, slst in the first sc. Fasten off.

Now we need to close the hat.

Pull starting tail between the dc’s from beginning below the hdc stitches like on the picture.

Tighten as much as you can and tie a few knots to secure it. Wave in end.

AND YOU’RE DONE! πŸ™‚

I hope you enjoyed it! πŸ™‚

  1. Just a heads up. I have a video I’m posting in a few days, where I made a faux fur Pom Pom but I’m adding it to your hat I made a few weeks ago. I wanted to put the link to this pattern in my description. Is that ok? I loved this hat SO MUCH, I wanted to add the link so people can find it. Keep up the awesome work!!!

    1. Sure, you can put the link! The more shares the better πŸ™‚ Thank you very much! Please send me the link to your video. Thank you! πŸ™‚

  2. Greetings, The pattern states that this hat is sized for an adult? Which size for an adult: average, large, etc. Thank you.

    1. Hi! I would say average, the hat is stretchy so it should fit all adults (male and female) πŸ™‚ Thank you! πŸ™‚
