FREE CROCHET PATTERN: Valentine card or small gift holder

I made this heart holder because I wanted so much to try C2C technique and it turned out it is sooo easy and fun!
This heart design uses only two colors of yarn and you’ll need only few bobbins to deal with. That is so great if you are not experienced with this technique.

The holder is made using C2C (corner-to-corner) technique. You need to be familiar with C2C technique to make it!

So, if you are ready, LET’S START! 🙂

For this pattern you will need:

  • Yarn

I used „Unitas Mirabela“, 100% cotton, weight: Sport/5 ply, 155 yards (142 meters) in 50 grams (1.76 ounces). You can use some of these brands if they are available to you for this pattern Aunt Lydia’s fashion 3 size 100% Mercerized cotton or “Patons Grace” 100% mercerized cotton or any other similar to these.

  • 2 mm crochet hook
  • yarn needle

Stitches used:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • slst – slip stitch

This pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms.

Finished size of the holder is about 13cm/5in x 10cm/4in when closed.

Finished size of the graph is about 11cm/4.3in x 24cm/9.5in without red border.

Here is a heart graph you need to follow to make the base of the holder.

Note: When you are making slst when decreasing make them loose because we will make 2 rounds of single crochet at the end.

When you finish last block don’t fasten off. Make 2 rows of single crochet around.

Row 1: In this row make 3 sc on every block. When you have slst on your block make one sc in every slst, when you have ch make one sc in every ch, when you have dc placed horizontal make 3 sc around that dc, when you have dc placed vertical make 1 sc in every dc. Slst in the first sc from beginning.

Every block around will have 3 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in every sc from previous row, slst in the first sc from beginning. Fasten off.

I would recommend that at this point you weave in all ends.

Now fold your hearts so one whole heart is up.

It is time to join the sides. Insert your hook through both sc of the sides and attach red.

Make 1 sc in every sc until you reach the end of shorter side and make those sc’s through both sides.

Continue to make 1 sc in every sc around the “lid”.

And at the end join two sides also making sc through both sides.

When you come to the end make ch 2, turn, make 2 hdc in every sc around. Fasten off.

I hope you enjoyed it! 🙂
