FREE CROCHET PATTERN: Yarn basket

I’ve been very busy these past few days and I wanted to make something to brake the tension between projects.
I decided to make this super easy and quick yarn basket with the yarn that was laying in my closet for quite some time.
If you also have yarn like that than this is a perfect project – quick, easy, and you’ll make something useful hehehe
Can you believe that it took me only 2 hours to make this basket?!?!

So, if you are ready, LET’S START! πŸ™‚

For this pattern you will need:

  • Yarn

(I used β€žIce Yarn – Misc Saleβ€œ, 100% Acrylic, 98 yards (90 meters) in 50 grams (1.76 ounces)) but you can use any yarn that is laying down there somwhere

  • 7 mm crochet hook (or hook required for your yarn)
  • yarn needle

Stitches used:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • slst – slip stitch

This pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms.

To make the basket you can use any yarn. If you are using thinner yarn than use 3 or 4 strands and if you are using thicker yarn than you can make it with one or two strands.

I made this basket using two strands of yarn.

Start with ch 2.

Row 1: 6 sc in 2nd chain from the hook, slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (6)

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 2 sc in every stitch around, slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (12)

Row 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (18)

Row 4: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 1 sc in next, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (24)

Row 5: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 1 sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (30)

Row 6: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 1 sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (36)

Row 7: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (42)

Row 8: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 1 sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next 6 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (48)

Row 9: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 1 sc in next 6 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next 7 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (54)

Row 10: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 1 sc in next 7 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next 8 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (60)

Row 11: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 1 sc in next 8 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next 9 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (66)

Row 12: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 1 sc in next 9 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next 10 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (72)

Row 13: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 1 sc in next 10 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next  11 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (78)

Row 14: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same sc that you made slst, 1 sc in next 11 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, *1 sc in next 12 stitches, 2 sc in next (repeat from * around), slst in the 1st sc from beginning. (84)

At this point my basket is about 25cm/10in in diameter but if you would like to make bigger basket you can continue to increasing the rows like we did until now, if you are satisfied with it’s current size continue on with the pattern.

From now we will not join rows with slst, we will work in round.

Make 1 sc in every stitch only through the back loop of the stitch until you reach desired height of the basket. I made 11 rounds and my basket is about 10cm/4in high, if you want you can continue making more rounds to make it higher.

To finish it make 3 more rounds of sc but through both loops like you usually do. Slst in next stitch, fasten off.

Weave in ends and you’re DONE!!! πŸ™‚

Pull your hooks and scissors through few rows (there is no separate strap for the hooks, pull them through the basket), you can also put around stitch markers, yarn needles or anything else you want to have near by while you’re crocheting. πŸ™‚

I hope you enjoyed it! πŸ™‚

  1. Hello. I made this basket, but I do not get the raised part where the crochet hooks are pictured in your photo! How did you get that raised portion! I did use two four ply skeins of yarn. Please share with me. Thanks. I love my basket.

    1. mine is a few rows taller and my son loved it. But?? that raised piece sure looks like a seperate piece for hooks etc. I croch tight but still /Look at photo (old eyes maybe) I still like the pattern & idea. May make a few patches for hooks, scissors, a pice for tape measure etc. Thanks

      1. Thank you! I wanted it to be as simple as possible so I just tucked in the hooks but you can sew on pockets if you want πŸ™‚
